The mobile landscape is evolving rapidly with a variety of possible portable experiences for the global audience – experiences in entertainment, marketing, mapping, finance, arts, training, health and agriculture. Mobile application development is a challenging endeavor where creativity and technology are equally important. Applications are developed on one platform and need to be deployed on another one – a mobile phone – but each device comes with its specificities. Data needs to be collected for future analysis and to inform for intelligent mobile applications.
This tutorial will help participants in their first step into the world of mobile. It will present the current global offering in terms of mobile applications – commercial applications and applications more focused on social changes. The mobile development process including usability concerns and quality assurance will be covered. The participants will understand different technologies that can be used to develop mobile applications with a particular focus on using Java ME. This tutorial will explore the following topics in Java ME: low-level and high-level user interfaces, record stores, SMS/MMS and Bluetooth. Google Android will be demonstrated.
The tutorial will be interactive. Participants will be invited to share the applications that are most popular and the needs of applications for social changes in their own countries. They will get hands-on experience by trying out different Java ME code fragments.
2. Presenter’ biography
Dr. Christelle Scharff (http://www.csis.pace.edu/~scharff) is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Pace University in New York City in the US. Her research background is in Formal Software Verification with a Ph.D. from the Université Henri Poincaré in Nancy in France. She published articles in Formal Software Verification, Data Mining, Global Software Development, Mobile Computing and Education. She was awarded diverse grants from NSF (National Science Foundation), Microsoft, IBM, and NCIIA (National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance). Her last NCIIA grants concern the development of mobile application development program in Senegal in Africa in collaboration with Stony Brook University in the US and the University of Thiès in Senegal.
3. Intended audience
This tutorial is intended for anybody interested in learning about mobile application development with Java ME. No Java experience is necessary but knowledge of at least one programming language is required.
This tutorial can also be of particular interest to faculty interested in starting research in mobile and integrating mobile into their teaching.
4. Description of material provided to participants
The resources used and developed during the tutorial (e.g., slides, code and URLs) will be available at: http://atlantis.seidenberg.pace.edu/wiki/senegal/Mobile.
5. Software requirements
This tutorial will follow the laptop format. Participants must bring their laptop to the tutorial.
Participants can install the following (free) software, but they will also be provided during the tutorial session.
